The main hope of this event is to provide a memorable Christmas celebration for less fortunate elementary students residing in the district who otherwise would not have that opportunity.

Many organizations put their support behind the event including the GJHS Key Club, the GJSD Board of Directors, Representative Bryan Barbin’s Office, the City of Johnstown, the Johnstown Police Department, the Cambria County Child Development Corporation, Johnstown alumnus LaRod Stephens- Howling, Nutrition Inc, ACRP, the Sprangle Family Learning Center, 1st Summit Bank along with countless other helpful individuals. The success of the evening would not have been possible without the support of the prior listed.

The event kicked off around 4:30 as students arrived with their families out of the cold winter air and were welcomed by the JHS chorus singing Christmas carols and escorting them into the JHS auditorium where at the top of the hour Mr. Richard Unger and Bryan Barbin presented a brief welcoming address to all the families in attendance which was followed up by a dramatic reading of “The Night Before Christmas” performed by a talented group of high school students. The reading and performance was a great kickoff to the event and started it off in the true Christmas spirit.

At the conclusion of the performance the students and families in attendance were escorted to the JHS Cafeteria where they were greeted with the sweet and savory smell of a home cooked Christmas dinner with all the fixings provided by Nutrition Inc. Greater Johnstown Alumnus LaRod Stephens-Howling footed the bill for the feast and allowed all families and students in attendance to have a wonderful dinner at this festive holiday event.

With everyone’s stomachs full from an extravagant Key Club students kept the festivities going by assisting the elementary students in attendance with making various Christmas crafts such as reindeer food, holiday puppets, paper plate snowmen, and Christmas tree ornaments just to name a few. The Key Club members also read stories to the children, helped them write letters to Santa, and decorated sugar cookies for them to enjoy. Families were served refreshments and relaxed and socialized with each other to the merry and jolly tunes of holiday music in the background and with a festive atmosphere all around them.

As the evening began to wind down and the festivities were coming to come a close the biggest surprise of all arrived… Santa! All the children were given the opportunity to meet with Santa who gave them a special Christmas gift, provided by generous donations from supporters of the event. All in all, the first ever Trojan Family Christmas was an amazing success putting everyone in attendance in the Christmas spirit. As the families were sent on their way, each and every person left with a huge smile on their face and would make their way back home to their beds. And with the help of the first ever Trojan Family Christmas would surely have visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads.

A Very Merry Trojan Family Christmas

By: Kiersten Szczur

The Greater Johnstown High School is presenting its first annual Very Merry Trojan Family Christmas this Thursday, December 22, for all children of the school district along with their families. This event is sure to bring all of the joy and wonder typically associated with the holiday season to the hearts of the individuals who attend. From welcoming carolers at the door, to a visit from jolly old Saint Nicholas, the event replicates an ideal "Night Before Christmas." The event, which will take place in Johnstown High School's Cochran Auditorium is set to begin at 4:30 pm with a brief welcoming by Mr. Richard Unger and state representative, Bryan Barbin, occurring a half-hour later at 5. The students will be able to enjoy a reading of "The Night Before Christmas" with the accompaniment of a small drama presentation, just before helping themselves to a holiday meal with all of the traditional fixings. Each child who attends the event will receive a nice gift from Santa Claus before he sends them on their way and returns to the North Pole to continue his preparation for Christmas Eve. The event is planned to end between the times of 7:30-8pm. Thanks to the Greater Johnstown Key Club, along with numerous other sponsors, this Trojan Family Christmas can lead to tremendous memories which last within the minds of so many children for years!

Press Relelase: Powerschool Mobile Apps – Coming Soon

December 8, 2011

In a continued effort to strengthen and reinforce the lines of communication between the school and home, the Greater Johnstown School District is excited to share the following information regarding the expansion of Powerschool access to mobile phones through the Apple IPhone device.

“In January 2012, Pearson will launch two new mobile apps: PowerSchool for Parents and PowerSchool for Students.

These new apps will allow parents and students to access all the same information they would normally access from a browser, but with the ease and convenience of an app installed on their Apple mobile device.

Automatic login, a family overview, simplified "one-thumb" browsing, and other features make accessing PowerSchool on the go faster and easier than ever before.

The apps will be FREE and available for download from the Apple iTunes App Store. Students from 5 area schools took on the challenge of representing an assigned country in a simulation of the United Nations. These student-delegates not only had to research the topics of debate, but also had to become experts on their assigned country. They studied demographics, economic systems, governments, natural resources, infrastructure, alliances, etc. and then argue the assigned topics from their nation’s perspective. “It provides a unique learning experience for all students involved,” said Mr. Thomas Staib, one of the advisors at the event. “The students are researching, writing, debating and then working cooperatively with other students to develop and present potential solutions to some pretty complex problems.”
The 20-student delegation from Greater Johnstown turned in a dominant performance, winning outright, or sharing the honor of Best Delegate in 3 of the 4 categories awarded, as well as winning 3 honorable mentions for the Best Delegate award. Nick Subich, Angie Stolar, and Kiersten Szczur were all recognized as Best Delegate in their respective committees, and Carly Cernic, Clare Stem, and Denzel Sullivan won Honorable mention for their efforts. Mr. Heinrich, another advisor to the group, said: “I am really excited about their performance. We have a lot of great students at this school that can compete with anyone academically. These students put in long hours after school and earned this recognition.”

Healthy Lessons

By: Kendra Slis

On Tuesday October 18th 2011 the Doc Stofko Gymnasium of JHS was transformed into a health fair as vendors from across the area brought their knowledge and experience to share with students and staff members. Some of the information that was presented ranged from tobacco use, driving safety, personal hygiene, eating habits, and drugs and alcohol. At the health fair students were given the opportunity to explore around and stop at the various vendors, ask questions, and even participate in some hands-on activities that the vendors had brought with them. These activities ranged from checking height and weight, having blood pressure taken, and wearing special “drunk goggles” which showed students just how hard it is to do simple activities like walk a straight line, catch a ball, or give someone a high five when you are under the influence. Vendors also had drawings which students could enter their names into to win various prizes, such as a free one hour massage, personal hygiene gift baskets, and gift cards to retail store chains. The students who won the drawings were notified the following day. All in all the event was a worthwhile learning experience which will hopefully result in everyone living a more healthy and nutritious lifestyle.

"In the Fight for the Cure"

By: Kendra Slis

Real men wear pink. On Friday October 14th 2011, the Greater Johnstown Trojan football team took on the Bishop McCort Crushers in what has become known as one of the biggest local rivalries. However, on October 14th, the focus was not only on the rivalry but on another battle, the battle against breast cancer.

The Trojans’ annual “Pink Game” was organized this year through the cooperative efforts of Representative Bryan Barbin and the Greater Johnstown Key Club. The event this year was bigger and better than ever and was organized with the hope of raising awareness and bringing attention to this terrible disease that effects the lives of 1 in every 8 women in the United States. The first major activity in the “Pink Game” was the selling of pink “In the fight for the cure” t-shirts which were available for purchase to students, staff, faculty, and the community. The intention of these shirts was for the entire Trojan Stadium to become a sea of pink on the evening of the 14th and send a powerful visual reminder that the community is willing to band together to find a cure.

On the evening of the game two additional events were on agenda. A 2-mile “Walk for the Cure” was held in order to bring attention to the dire need to fight this disease and find a cure once and for all. Participants in the walk were asked to register and give a $10 donation but participants sporting a pink “In the Fight for the Cure” shirt had the donation waived. The walk could be chalked up as a success as participants marched through the rain and shine to show their support for finding a cure and were encouraged by the beeps and honks of car horns as they drove by showing their support of the walkers’ mission. Following the arrival back at the school, a tailgate was held with free food, music, and entertainment allowing fans to show their support in finding a cure, get into the Trojan spirit, and prepare for the epic battle that would follow.

The game itself was without a doubt an exciting one and Trojan faithful rejoiced as the Men of Troy defeated their rivals from down the street with a score of 41-20. However, not only did the game result in a victory for the Trojans but students, teachers, and members of the community could leave feeling good as they had hosted a successful event that raised awareness about and contribute towards the goal of finding a cure for breast cancer. The evening all in all showcased the real power of pink.

Trojans Wear Red

BY: Kendra Slis

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women. Every 34 seconds a person in the United States dies from heart disease. The statistics are shocking. However, on Friday September 9th 2011 the Johnstown Trojan Football Boosters in association with the GJHS Key Club, the Trojan College Access Center, and the American Heart Foundation made a cooperative effort to do their part in trying to lower these statistics. Thus, during the first football home game of the season versus Penn Cambria the Johnstown Trojans hosted the first ever “Trojans Trample Heart Disease” game.

This special event’s concept was created with the memory of Brenda King in the minds and hearts of students and staff members. Mrs. King was the mother of recent Greater Johnstown High School graduates John and Jennifer King. Mrs. King had lost her battle with heart disease and passed away in the spring of 2011 and is dearly missed by many. The special “Trojans Trample Heart Disease” game was held in her honor. To help promote the cause special “Trojans Wear Red” apparel was sold in the preceding days before the event and also made available during the game. The design on the shirts featured the “Trojans Wear Red” phrase along with a red ribbon, the American Heart Foundation logo, and Brenda King’s initials. Proceeds from the shirts went towards a donation to be made to the American Heart Foundation in memory of Mrs. King. Also proceeds will go towards a scholarship created by the Trojan College Access Center honoring Brenda King’s namesake.

The game itself turned out to be a huge success. As fans entered the stadium they were greeted by dozens and dozens of red balloons, a huge mural on the scoreboard fence reading B. King, and signs and banners supporting the cause adorned Trojan Stadium. Fans showed up ready to cheer wearing their red apparel and everywhere you looked the color was present, it filled one’s heart with joy. Even though the skies let loose close to the end of the game the Trojan faithful stuck around to cheer on their team. In the end the Trojans did their job by defeating the Penn Cambria Panthers 31-8. But the Trojans also did their part in supporting a truly worthwhile cause

New Club at JHS

Technology Student Association (TSA) will be available to JHS students in the upcoming school year. Students can work individually or as a team in over 30 different competitions in areas such as agriculture and biotechnology, website design, dragster design, flight challenge, film technology, CAD with 3D modeling, desktop publishing, extemporaneous speaking, radio controlled transportation or scientific visualization. TSA takes the study of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) beyond the classroom and gives students the chance to pursue academic challenges among friends with similar goals and interests. Members will work on competitive events both in the classroom and after school. They can also attend conferences at the local, state, and national levels, and have a good time raising funds to get there. Education directives at the federal and state levels focus on providing avenues for initiatives such as STEM education. All TSA activities are correlated to the Standards for Technological Literacy, as set forth by the International Technology Education Association (ITEA). TSA’s activities will be used during the school day in the classroom and extend the learning beyond the classroom.

GJHS Launches Robotics Classes

As part of the new Engineering and Technology Department GJHS students will now be able to participate in two Robotics Classes. Robotics is an engaging way to integrate all facets of STEM education into the classroom. The introductory course which began this year gives students a broad base in introductory robotics concepts. Students practice their skills by using robots to solve real-world problems in a classroom environment. The students use the VEX Robotics Design System. VEX offers students an exciting platform for learning about areas rich with career opportunities spanning science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Robotics projects encourage teamwork, leadership and problem solving among groups. Starting in the 2010-11 school year students will have a course offering called competitive robotics. Head-to-head competition is a natural way to capture students' attention. Competitions will be specifically tailored to bring STEM concepts into the classroom. Students who choose Competitive robotics will design, build, test, analyze and then compete against students from other schools at the local, state, and national levels. During the excitement that comes with building and competing with their robots, students will be having too much fun to realize they're learning important STEM concepts and life skills.

Trojans Display at Energy Fair

Greater Johnstown Seniors Tyler Arsenault and Jerrell Hardison designed and created an Eco-friendly model home to display at the Central PA Energy Fair at the Pasquerilla Conference Center in downtown Johnstown. The new Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum looks to transform the typical teacher-centered classroom by encouraging a curriculum that is driven by problem-solving, discovery, exploratory learning, and require students to actively engage a situation in order to find its solution. STEM aims to teach independent innovation and allows students to explore greater depths of all of subjects by utilizing skills that are going to be required in order for today’s students to be tomorrow’s global leaders. Jobs in the 21st century are requiring workers to have a greater ability to think critically, communicate ideas, and work as a member of a team. This program will give high school students a chance to refine these important skills making them better prepared to enter the 21st century job market. All students entering the ninth grade will now take a class called Engineering Concepts which will be the introductory class in the program. After the introductory course students at Greater Johnstown High School will have the opportunity to choose classes such as: Emerging and Green Technology, Agile Robotics, Structural Development and Design, Transportation Development and Design, and Technology Student Association in the Classroom just to name a few. The Engineering and Technology Department includes Teachers: Barry Deetscreek, Ed Dierling, Richard Capraun, Mark Mosorjak, and Jeff Blanchetti.

JHS Senior Wins Weight Lifting Competition

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ELlW9ytXozs/TcwXZDN8ZkI/AAAAAAAAAB8/_GAMUZS-SLM/s320/justin.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5605881355297384002" />
By: Katie Smolen

To many, the world of power lifting just seems like a fantasy that is created for television screens and films because most people have not seen them in real life. But for one Johnstown High School Senior, Justin Capouellez, the competition is real. He has recently competed in one of these events.

On Saturday, April thirtieth, Capouellez competed in his sixth power lifting contest. Capouellez, who competed in the 148-pound raw division, can bench 435 lbs, lift 905 lbs in the dead lift, and can lift 275 lbs in the squat.

Capouellez, who has been lifting since the 6th grade, started to compete in 2009. Four days a week, he starts his day at 4 AM to help him prepare for his competitions.

Capouellez is coached by JHS Health Education teacher, Dave Schleich, who also has competed in similar power lifting competitions for many years. With his hard work and dedication Capouellez has placed in 5 of his 6 competitions. He hopes that he can continue to succeed in the world of power lifting.

Reading Buddies

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 180px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CSb3Qol4-6Y/TbhT4G42v3I/AAAAAAAAAB0/RmuKw8iOkjc/s320/reading%2Bbuddies%2B4-25.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600318360022073202" />
Members of the GJHS Key Club visited with the students of West Side Elementary again this month to encourage good decision making skills, leadership, and to stress the importance and fun of reading. The Reading Buddies program has become an annual program for the Key Club, and one that they really enjoy. “It is great because the elementary students see “cool” kids from the high school reading, and having fun. It shows them that reading is cool.” said Deanna Boerstler. The program helps the older students as well. Boerstler leads a team of Key Clubbers who gain a real-world service-learning experience, by researching age-appropriate books, raising the funds to purchase the books, and then planning a reflection activity that reinforces the themes of the reading. “The younger students learn that reading is fun and the older students learn a lot about the importance of setting a good example, as they practice critical thinking and intra-personal skills.” said Key Club Advisor Tom Staib. The program takes place once a month, and involves about 20 high school students reading with the Pre-K through 3rd grade classes at West Side. Mrs. Kelly Thomas, who coordinates the program at West Side, reports that her students love the program, and is hopeful that it can be continued next school year.

Kyra Miller Awarded the REB Scholarship from UPJ

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 215px; height: 237px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gYrnmQhwgOQ/TbhToMP8RaI/AAAAAAAAABs/7GOvuG8Ly8E/s320/Kyra%2BMiller.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600318086583174562" />
Kyra Miller, a senior at GJHS, has been awarded the REB scholarship from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. This scholarship provides tuition for four years and pays for books and fees as well. Students do not apply for this scholarship, but are chosen by the Office of Admissions out of the incoming freshman class; the office chooses only 40 recipients for this honor out of well over 1,000 potential candidates.

The REB Scholarship was created from the donation of a generous Alumnus who wanted to help local students succeed at the University. The fact is however, that hunger and homelessness is occurring every day, right here in Johnstown.

Last year, students involved in the Greater Johnstown High School Key Club instituted the “Empty Bowls-Hunger Awareness Project.” For several months, club members gathered data and disseminated information throughout the area regarding the seriousness of hunger as a social issue. They worked diligently, making over 500 ceramic bowls, advertising, selling tickets, and organizing over 6 local agencies and over 100 volunteers who participated in the event. What they put together was nothing less than spectacular. The 2010 Empty Bowls Event combined a delicious meal of soup and bread, a variety of local entertainment, and educational information on hunger and homelessness on a beautiful Johnstown spring evening. The 2011 version promises to be every bit as remarkable.

This year’s project will culminate with the “Empty Bowls” dinner Wednesday, May 4, 2011 from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the Saint Mary’s Byzantine Church hall and pavilion in Cambria City. Tickets are available to the general public, entitling them to a simple meal of bread and soup and exposure to information that will help define the needs of hunger and homelessness within our area. Key Club members will decorate handcrafted bowls for the event. The “empty bowls” (hand made ceramic bowls that guests get to keep with each paid ticket) are to symbolize the plight of some of our less fortunate neighbors. All guests will enjoy a variety of cross-cultural entertainment along with their soup and bread. Local human service agencies will have information available that evening detailing how they work to fight these problems in our own community.

The project is funded through the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Learn and Serve Program. This program provides funds for students to participate in service-learning projects that intersect with the Commonwealth’s Standards of Education in the classroom.

Proceeds will be donated to St. Vincent DePaul, the Women’s Help Center, and the Salvation Army.

The tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

For more information or ticket information, please call 814-533-5601, ext. 1330.

-Rob Heinrich

SPRING WELLNESS

FREE Health and Fitness Event for high school students,
their parents and grandparents!

GJHS, in collaboration with Conemaugh Health System, will host a Spring Wellness day on May 21st. To be fair to all students and to allow ample time for year end achievements to be evaluated, The Challenge Program will distribute underclassmen awards in the Fall using year end results to determine award winners in all categories. This means the Sophomores and Juniors can work to improve their grades, attendance and community service through the end of the school year to qualify for an award in one or more categories. The Challenge Program will join you as you return for school in the Fall to issue the awards and kick off the program for the new year.

The Challenge Program will be issuing the Senior winners their awards at the annual awards ceremony in the spring. Senior awards will be determined by results of achievements through the end of the 3rd grading period.

The Challenge Program looks forward to awarding all the winners for their hard work and commitment.

It's Better to Give Than Receive

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pfztQOFIH6A/TYjJLB_0zjI/AAAAAAAAABM/KA4LXpKjf3M/s320/penna.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5586936529104981554" />
By: Shon Brantley

East Side’s own Alli Penna, daughter of Athletic Director/Varsity Head Football Coach Tony Penna Jr. and Danielle Penna, raised awareness for cancer on her own special day. Instead, she wanted people to donate presents or money to Heather’s Haven. Heather’s Haven is an undergoing camp that will be for children with cancer to attend, along with their families and their pets. Heather’s Haven is a camp in honor of Heather Miller, a Bedford native, who passed away after battling Ewing's sarcoma, a rare childhood bone and tissue cancer. Kim Reifsnyder, coordinator of the camp, hopes to have the camp opened by spring of 2012.

Heather was 11 when she lost battle with the disease and Alli was turning 11. This year’s selection is titled “Once Upon A Mattress.” The show is a comedy-filled version of “The Princess and the Pea.” Along with some familiar cast members, there are some fresh new faces to keep your eye out for.
“Once Upon A Mattress” is a Rodgers and Hammerstein classic. Its Broadway performance included many well known actresses and actors. Some which included Carol Burnett, who portrayed the role of Queen Aggravain, and Sarah Jessica Parker as Princess Winnifred.
In the musical, the prince, Dauntless, is looking for a princess to be his wife. All the ladies in waiting must wait until Dauntless gets married before they can rightfully take their hand in marriage. Sir Harry, who is another main character, goes on a hunt for a princess that could potentially be a future wife for Dauntless. He comes across a princess named Winnifred. Now, Winnifred is not your average princess; she is outspoken and improper. He takes the princess back to the castle where she then meets the queen. The queen tests the young princess. If she passes the test,she is able to marry Dauntless. Queen Aggravain tests the princess by seeing if she will ever fall asleep, so she puts a small pea under a tower of mattresses. Winnifred is unable to fall asleep, which leads to her beating the royalty test of sensitivity--a trait that every true princess has. Dauntless and Winnifred then get married in the end, along with Sir Harry, Lady Larken, and all the other Ladies in Waiting.
The dates of the show will be on March 10th, 11th, and 12th at 7 p.m. and on March 13th at 2 p.m. in Cochran auditorium. Tickets will go on sale prior to these dates. This should be another successful musical by the Greater Johnstown High School students.

**Tickets are $7 and can be purchased in the main office at the high school. This is a tremendous accomplishment for the school, district, and Greater Johnstown Community. JHS is filled with wonderful students, teachers, and coaches who are dedicated to student success. In addition, JHS has been named one of America’s Best High Schools according to the U.S. News and World Report for the past 3 consecutive years. In order to reach these wonderful accomplishments, JHS instituted a plan to carefully evaluate all elements of instruction at the high school. The main focus of our analysis was and continues to be our curriculum, instructional methods, assessments, student course scheduling, tutoring, and student improvement monitoring. The effective and efficient use of formative assessments, quality questioning, researched based strategies, and data driven instruction are some of the key components of our efforts toward systematic change and ultimately academic improvement. It is with great pride that I can state that the last four years have resulted in the highest levels of student achievement ever at GJHS. Math and Reading scores have increased significantly. As a result, we have exceeded or met the state requirements of (A.Y.P.) the past four years.

For this accomplishment the student, teachers and parents have much to be proud of. Great teaching, teamwork, collaboration, student focus and commitment on academic improvement are some of the main reasons for our success. However, I cannot stress enough how important the role is that you the parents and guardians of our students play in helping our students achieve success. For your tremendous support I am eternally grateful. October 29th. Varsity Football: JHS vs. Central Cambria

Prior to kick off between the JHS Trojans and Central Cambria Red Devils, GJSD will take a brief moment to celebrate some district success and student achievement by recognizing some of the many successful graduates who are currently enrolled in a college or trade school from last year’s graduating class. Last year’s graduates received over $140,000 in scholarship money from the Greater Johnstown School District and Trojan College Access Program. Furthermore, the Trojan College Access program has awarded over $100,000 in scholarship money over the past three years and will award $50,000 in scholarships to deserving students this year! It is truly making a difference and making college a possibility for our students.

This event will take place at 6:50pm.

Furthermore, through additional funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), GJSD demonstrated increased achievement in mathematics and reading without increasing taxpayer dollars. JHS was named the most improved school in the Commonwealth and has successfully received the US News and World Report Best High School award for two consecutive years. The GJSD has made Adequate Yearly Progress over the last three years, even while the expected benchmarks have risen. The Greater Johnstown School District and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) is committed to student excellence!

Since 2003-2010:

The percentage of students scoring on grade level has gone up:
* 39% in math (44.7% to 62.1%)
* 1% in reading (53.7% to 54.4%)
The percentage of students scoring below basic has gone down:
* 39% in math (31.4% to 19.1%)
* 28% in reading (27.4% to 21.3%)

Increased student achievement has been made possible in part because of increased state education funding focused on targeted, proven programs that enhance the student’s classroom experience. The GJSD is committed to implementing research proven strategies that are designed to increase student achievement and provide our students with meaningful learning opportunities.

Since 2003‐04, Greater Johnstown SD has received a 42% increase in state funds for education. This includes increases in the Basic Education Fund, Accountability Block Grant, and the Education Assistance Program, Classrooms for the Future and Pre‐K Counts funds.
Without this increase in state funds, local property taxes would have increased in order to provide the same services to students. A Nook is an electronic book reader that is based on the Android platform. Nooks include wi-fi and AT&T wireless connectivity, plus a 6-inch E-Ink display and a separate smaller touch screen that is the primary input device. The main purpose for ordering the Nooks is to help increase the reading fluency and vocabulary of the students. They are available to all teachers upon request. The teachers can download numerous books for the students to read. Mr. Vuckovich wants students to enjoy reading and to want to read more, so he is trying to make reading more enjoyable for our generation, which is surrounded by technology on a daily basis.

Painting Pride

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_f2KUKDzX1fM/TMYV0qyHyRI/AAAAAAAAAAc/QcgI5XZeEis/s320/pride+and+tradition.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5532133186853128466" />
Under the direction of Miss Maloy (the arts and crafts teacher), and Mrs. Patula, (the commercial arts teacher) students at the Greater Johnstown High School painted an amazing mural in the hallway by the gym. The mural depicts the Trojan logo with the words, "Johnstown Trojan Pride and Tradition,” set inside blue & black stripes that mimic those found on the sleeves of the school’s football jersey. Many students put a lot of effort into painting this impressive mural, including Alex Alberter, Lucas Tomak, William Seth, Haley Helsel, Justin Palmer, Deanna Boerstler, and Renee Smay. The mural is meant to instill school pride and to provide inspiration to the athletic teams as they exit the locker rooms en route to the gymnasium or fields for their competitions.

District 6 Chorus

This past Sunday, JHS hosted the auditions for District 6 Chorus. The websites contain course syllabi, teacher contact information, blogs, news and announcements, and many other useful features. The goal of having the websites is to open the lines of communication with parents and students and to make them feel more proactive in their education through another avenue. There are many benefits that come from having these classroom websites. Parents can be made aware of the various activities that are occurring in their child's classrooms. Students can access the websites when they are absent from school to know what they missed. This will help them to be on track with the rest of the class upon their return to school. Overall, these classroom websites are a valuable addition to our school web page.

Alumni Band Information

JHS
Music Department
222 Central Avenue – Johnstown, PA 15902
Phone (814) 533-5601 X1116 – Fax (814) 533-5698

Dear Alumni,

I am pleased to announce that once again the JHS Trojan Marching Band will be hosting an Alumni Band on Friday, October 8th 2010 at our football game versus Bedford. Kiersten is a fifteen year old sophomore who is talented musically, athletically, and academically.

Kiersten recently discovered her love for theatre. She started dancing at the age of four and always was a good actress, but it wasn't until her ninth grade year when she decided to try out for the school's musical, Footloose. Kiersten was nervous and unsure of how her audition would turn out, but she was cast as one of the lead roles--"Rusty."

Over the summer of 2010, Kiersten was a participant in the Richland Performing Arts Program, which put on the musical, Guys and Dolls. Kiersten said she had never been more nervous for the results of an audition in her life. After a long, endless day of waiting, she heard the good news. She was cast as "Sarah," the female lead. She also performed at the Arcadia Theatre as the "Witch" from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs of the Black Forest. Kiersten is currently working on a musical for Redwood Productions, called A Rented Christmas, which will be performed at the Arcadia Theatre in November.

Kiersten says that she loves to play both serious and fun roles. She loves the serious roles because they really bring the audience into the emotions that the character is feeling. Yet, she loves the fun roles because of the laughter and joy they bring the audience. She loves the fact that she is able to be someone else and to make that character her own.

As Kiersten takes on many roles, she also takes on many challenges. Some of these challenges include maintaining all A's in every class, playing soccer, pitching during softball season, participating in track, attending Key Club and Writer's club meetings, and squeezing in time for her friends and family. In the future, Kiersten wants to be Valedictorian of her class, along with being accepted to NYU to major in Theatre. Her life-long goal is to make it to Broadway.

When asked who her inspiration was she said, "Myself; I push myself in everything I do because my greatest fear in life is being a failure." Some of her role models are Sarah Brightman, who was the original "Christine Daae?" in The Phantom of the Opera and Lady Gaga.

With the love and support of her family and friends, Kiersten should be able to fulfill each and every thing she strives to achieve. Valedictorian, NYU, and Broadway can one day be in reach for this amazingly talented girl.

Benjamin Herdman, a 5th grade student at West Side has been accepted into People to People World Leadership Forum. Randy Hogue, a motivational speaker who survived an abusive childhood and substance addiction as a young adult, inspired students and offered four keys to becoming a positive and purposeful student: 1. Proclaim Your Rarity: Everyone is unique and can offer something special to our world. 2. Go the Extra Mile: Don’t settle for mediocrity—strive for excellence. 3. Use Wisely Your Power to Choose: The uniquely human power of choice can be used to help others and oneself in positive ways. 4. Do It All With Love: Toward others and yourself.
JMS 8th grader Samantha Miller was moved by Hogue’s message. “His family history is sad, but it was a great lesson. People start using drugs to deal with stress and to escape reality, but the drugs always make the problems worse and then become problems themselves,” Stated Miller.
On the same day, three time X-Games medalist Matt Wilhelm spoke to JMS students about the benefits of academics before thrilling the audience with a demonstration of his skills. Wilhelm, known as one of the best BMX flatland riders in the world attained a high percentage of his athletic success—including a Silver Medal in the World Championships—while attending college on an academic and music scholarship, eventually earning a Bachelors degree with High Honors.
As one of the many audience members involved in Wilhelm’s demonstration, JMS 7th grader Adrian Fisher enthusiastically volunteered for a lesson using Wilhelm’s bicycle. “It was cool to learn a trick and to perform it in front of all the students,” Stated Fisher. Wilhelm’s grand finale involved jumping his bicycle over Principal Darren Buchko, Assistant Principal Frank Frontino, and science teacher Phyllis Meyers.
Wilhelm’s visit was made possible by JMS students’ reaching a magazine sales goal during a Great American Opportunities fundraiser arranged by sales representative Jeff Page. Profits from the fundraiser were used to subsidize the cost of the JMS yearbook for students. “Our goal is to have a high quality yearbook in full-color that all of our students can afford. We want all of our students to have the opportunity twenty of thirty years from now to sit with their children and reminisce about the great times they had here at JMS, including this assembly,” Stated JMS Principal Darren Buchko.

J. After all, music is their game and being the best in percussion is their name; albeit different than the accustomed band competitions, the Junior Achievement Challenge proved to be no different to these teens that are used to giving their best efforts at all times. The boys brought to this competition the determination that they typically exhibit during the band season and it paid off, as Gosnell, Ruiz, and Wilcox not only entered this JA Business Challenge, but brought home the win for Johnstown High School in the form of brand new laptop computers and a place in the Grand Championship event in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

On March 11, 2010, twenty-eight teams of three students each from the Somerset, Cambria, and Indiana counties traveled to the IUP main campus to compete in the Junior Achievement Titan Business Challenge. The challenge itself entailed engaging in a simulation of the running of a futuristic business; participants had to make decisions such as which stocks to invest in, when to buy and sell those shares, and how high the prices for their product should be in order for consumers to purchase the item so that the industry could make a profit. Students, who were forced to use their math and logic skills to be a success in this world of business, were permitted to practice the simulation online individually in order to prepare for the competition. The JHS team was formed by Ruiz, who had heard about the event and received permission to compete, and Mr. Richard Capraun, the web design teacher at JHS, agreed to be the chaperone. Says Capraun of the competition, "This was a great challenge for our students in a real world simulation. They learned a lot about being a CEO of a business." Adds Wilcox, "It was a pleasant surprise to find out that we had won, but, more importantly, we gained a lot of knowledge about investing and budgeting, a skill that's really going to be useful after we graduate high school."

Sophomore Jordan Ruiz and seniors Andrew Wilcox and Nelson Gosnell are all members of the JHS Marching Band and the indoor percussion team. Ruiz plans to continue his education at a university yet to be selected. Gosnell, who is a member of the tennis team in addition to the band, plans on attending Slippery Rock University in the fall, and Wilcox, also involved in the JHS Key Club and Eagle Scouts, will be continuing his education at the University of Pittsburgh. Although none of the three plans on majoring in business at college, the skills needed to survive in the corporate world which they acquired during this competition will undoubtedly prove necessary in their daily lives.

The Grand Championship Event that the JHS has earned the right to participate in is being held at La Roche College in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, May 12, 2010. When asked about the upcoming challenge, Gosnell said, "We're all extremely excited to go to Pittsburgh and show what we can do. We plan on doing Johnstown proud in this competition." Ruiz confirms this hope, exclaiming, "We're going to dominate!" Spoken like a true Trojan.

THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS AT PLANET ICE

By: Alyson Kelly

It has always been an aim of the Johnstown High School Key Club, being a community service organization, to lend a hand to people in our community by either participating in fundraisers or helping to deliver encouraging messages to people that could use a little pick-me-up. It then should come as no surprise that the Key Club offered to aid in the execution of the final round of short track speed skating for the Special Olympics in Cambria County being held at Planet Ice in Johnstown on February 23. The mission of the Special Olympics is to empower individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities by providing them with an opportunity to become fit and to engage in competition with their peers. In addition to the events that took place at Planet Ice on February 23, other competitions such as skiing took place at Blue Knob Ski Resort and Hidden Valley Ski Resort, while the figure skating contests were held at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena.

The Key Club volunteers helped in the efforts at Planet Ice by assisting the skaters in prepping for their races, aiding in the bleacher seating, escorting those competing from the locker room to the ice, and interacting with skaters who were waiting for their race to begin. According to the volunteers, most of the skaters that participated seemed to be affected by Down Syndrome, a chromosomal disorder that involves a variety of birth defects ranging from characteristic facial features, intellectual disability, heart problems, and other overall health issues. Those afflicted with the disease are more likely to develop heart and intestinal defects, hearing and memory loss, infections, thyroid problems, and leukemia; it is one of the most common genetic birth defects, affecting 1 in 800 babies a year in the United States. In addition to skaters with Down Syndrome, others had disabilities such as blindness.

The first thirty or forty Key Club members that signed up to assist with the Special Olympics were permitted to attend, and one such member was Deanna Sanders, a sophomore at Johnstown High School who is her class representative for the service organization. When asked to give her opinion on helping with the Special Olympics, she indicated that she felt very inspired by the determination of those with disabilities, saying, "For me, helping out people afflicted with mental and physical disabilities was a great learning experience. The competitors were outgoing and fun to be around; they proved to be extremely talented and caring as well. By helping with this event, I felt that I was doing a service for those less fortunate than me." Sanders expressed an opinion that is likely held by all those who were involved, and the Key Club is thankful for the opportunity to be able to assist with the Special Olympics.

"PINK THE DOC" AT JHS

By: Alyson Kelly

Breast cancer awareness has become a lofty goal of more and more institutions across the nation as the epidemic heightens throughout the world. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 186,467 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States in the year 2005 alone. Far from merely being a national statistic to be recorded for posterity, this tragically high number of cases indicates that breast cancer can and does affect everyone. Increasing the awareness of breast cancer has proven to be the key to raising money for a cure for the disease, helping women around the world to recognize their symptoms, and to treat the cancer in its earliest stages. In addition to business corporations, medical research foundations, and the typical charity organizations, establishments of education have proven not to be immune to the giving spirit that entails helping those afflicted with the disease, and Johnstown High School has not been excluded from this admirable movement.

Taking the cue from the charitable attitude displayed by the volleyball team earlier in the school year, the JHS girl's basketball team, along with the opposing rival team Bishop McCort, decided to raise money to increase breast cancer awareness during a game earlier in the month. The Lady Trojans gathered donations for the breast cancer awareness fund from teachers, parents, and neighbors in the weeks leading up to the big game against McCort; around $600 was collected between the two schools. The JHS gym was decked out in pink paraphernalia, the color of breast cancer awareness, for the game, and the JHS girls sported pink warm-up shirts as well. Although the Lady Trojans gave a valiant effort during the game, their efforts came up short against McCort, losing 53-41.

Freshman member of the JHS girl's basketball team, Hannah Chilcot, raised about $50 of the total $600 for the breast cancer awareness fund by collecting donations from various teachers. Involved in the school's Key Club and also a member of the volleyball team, Hannah thoroughly feels that the money is going to a good cause, saying, "I felt really good about the whole thing, raising money for this disease that affects so many families in, but not limited to, Johnstown High School. It was a pleasure to be able to help in this way."

A Win for The Challenge Program

By: Alyson Kelly

Community service, academic achievement, academic improvement, attendance. Four important criteria in the game of life that nevertheless get downplayed, especially in the day to day lives of today's adolescents. Luckily for current and future generations, a program dedicated to the promotion of these values has been created to improve the future of individual students as well the nation in which they live.

The Challenge Program, Inc. was founded by Johnstown native and CEO of MTS Technologies, Inc. Dan Perkins in 2003 as a way to give back to his community. The Program focuses on awarding cash amounts to students who excel in community service, academic achievement, academic improvement, or attendance; because of this incentive, high school pupils across seven counties of southwestern Pennsylvania are now even more motivated to perform well in school. Success in school by today's generation, maintains Perkins, promotes a better future for the entire country.

The Challenge Program, a nonprofit organization, was recently awarded with $51,000 by the Wal-Mart Foundation to Assist with Programs that Encourage Student Achievement to aid in providing these cash incentives to sixteen area high schools. The check was presented in a ceremony to Mr. Perkins on December 16, 2009, at Conemaugh Valley Senior High School before students, past award winners, school representatives that included students from Johnstown High School, and local officials. Conemaugh Valley High School, which graciously hosted the press release of these new funds, gave a superb band performance that preluded the formal presentation of the grant and provided those in attendance with refreshments afterwards. Noted speakers included one of the Founding Executive Directors of The Challenge Program Barbara Grandinetti, the marketing director of the area Wal-Mart's, representative of the Education Department of Pennsylvania Mitch Agurs, and the founder of the organization Dan Perkins. In addition, two Conemaugh Valley High School students who have been awarded with cash incentives by The Challenge Program in the past briefly spoke of how the money helped them to pursue service and academic goals around the world.

In addition to these Conemaugh Valley students, two students from Johnstown High School who had been awarded with cash from The Challenge Program in the previous years were present that day as well. Richard Agurs and Katie Kovalchik won money from the program for academic improvement and community service, respectively. Kovalchik, now a senior planning to attend Penn State, was given the money during her sophomore year in high school and stored it in a savings account. Says Katie, "I greatly appreciated the money that The Challenge Program gave me as an award for my hours of community service. I'm glad that Mr. Perkins is closer to his goal of making the program national by this new partnership with Wal-Mart because I feel that it really does encourage students."

Dan Perkins has plans to make The Challenge Program a national organization in the future, and the new partnership with one of the largest retailers in the world is, he feels, a huge step towards making that dream a reality. After accepting the over-sized check made out to The Challenge Program for the amount of $51,000, Mr. Perkins made an acceptance speech that described his dedication to the development of today's youth. Speaking directly to the high school students in attendance that day, Perkins said, "I will be watching you."

JMS Teacher Honored

A Middle School teacher, Carrie Andraychak, is Pennsylvania’s Middle School Advisor of the Year. All seniors on the team wrote a personal letter to the teacher(s) who have made a difference in their lives and invited them to attend the game. Prior to the start of the game, these teachers and student athletes were recognized at mid –court. This night was hailed as a huge success by Coach Cobaugh. The teachers wore black to be part of the “Black Out” fan section that cheers on the blue and black of Johnstown High. In order to support the event, JHS Art teacher Mrs. Trish Patula and her students created a banner for the teacher section.

Coach Cobaugh was delighted at the turnout of school district employees. “I want to express my sincere appreciation for the turnout. When I walked into the locker room to talk to the team after our win, all I heard were players talking about what teacher, what administrator or what school employee or official they saw at the game. I wish I could show you how important it was and what it meant to the players.” “As a former player myself, I know what it meant to me to have some of the teachers show up and tell me how proud they were of our team effort. When a teacher makes that connection to a student, the student will see that teacher as a special person. GJSD teachers are excellent teachers and special people who care about our students!”

Educator Night will be carried over to all athletic teams. The next night will be held on February 3rd, 2010, as the Lady Trojans take on Bishop McCort.

J. Junior Breanna Rock submitted the fourth chapter to the Tribune Democrat’s “Your Story” contest last week and it was chosen for publication. Breanna is a student in Brieana Day’s Journalism class and completed the chapter as a class assignment. She is involved in cheerleading, track and participates in the school’s musical.

“Your Story” is a bi-weekly contest that encourages readers to become writers by composing the next four chapters in installments. Each chapter continues from where the previous one ends. The first chapter was written by an editor from the Tribune Democrat, the second by an author, and the third by a local doctor. The story is about a former Johnstown woman who returns 10 years later to begin her new life. The chapters are to incorporate a holiday theme and have Johnstown as the setting. All of the chapters can be found on the Tribune Democrat’s website. Breanna was one of many who entered a chapter for the story, which was published on December 13th. She and the entire journalism class are currently writing the fifth chapter, individually, which will be submitted in hopes of having another winning entry.

To read Bre's story, click on the link below:

http://www.tribune-democrat.com/features/local_story_344125108.html

GJHS Among America’s Best High Schools

By: Alyson Kelly

The last few years at JHS have consisted of success after success. Greater Johnstown High School has been recognized as one of the top learning institutions in the state of Pennsylvania, and has won for the second consecutive year a bronze medal in America's Best High Schools Project.

America's Best High Schools Project, is sponsored by Standard and Poor's School Evaluation Services, a data research business. To fairly assess the schools across the nation, Standard and Poor's chose to bypass the traditional method for the ranking, the Challenge Index, in favor of the newly designed Top-Performing High Schools Method. The Challenge Index is valued for its simplicity, but these researchers felt that it focused too much on the number of Advanced Placement tests taken instead of the performance on them. The core principle of the Top-Performing High Schools Method, however, is that the school in question serves all of its students well. This is measured with three requirements: the school serves all its students well by exceeding expectations on state tests with the poverty level of the school figured in; it serves disadvantaged students by producing scores above the minimum required on state tests; and the College Readiness Index, which is measured by the participation and performance of students in AP classes.

Greater Johnstown High School earned a bronze medal in this ranking. JHS has been steadily raising its PSSA scores over the years, due to data driven instruction, good teaching, and the 4Sight tests that are taken five times a year by the students, developed for the sole purpose of preparing them for the PSSAs. If a student doesn't achieve proficient in the reading and math tests then he is taken out of an elective and put into a skills development class, serving the purpose of helping students who need assistance.

Schools that received a silver or gold medal in the America's Best High Schools Project had met the first two standards of the competition and were judged on the College Readiness Index from there. The top 100 schools were awarded a gold medal and the next 504 schools received a silver. In addition to this, a few schools that would have earned a gold based on the College Readiness Index but didn't fully meet the first two requirements were given Honorable Mentions. JHS has had a successful year in athletics, and the bronze medal earned shows that the school is successful in academic achievement, as well. Regarding this high honor, Principal Michael Vuckovich says, "It's an incredible accomplishment for the Greater Johnstown School District. We have a great teaching staff, great kids, and wonderful leadership from our school board and Superintendent, Barbara Parkins--all of which are reflected by this award. I speak for the entire school when I say that we are humbled and honored by this award."

GJHS Marks Health Careers Week by Holding Career Fair

By Katie Smolen

November 9-13 was Health Careers Week. In honor of this, with the help of Career Link, the Greater Johnstown High School held a career fair.

The career fair, which was held on Tuesday, November tenth, had a total of sixteen vendors. Some offered more to students than just health field related opportunities. The participants included: Allegheny Manufacturing and Electrical Service, Inc.; JWF Industries; Carpenter's Joint Apprenticeship; Aseracare Hospice; Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center; Pennsylvania Department of Transportation; Greater Johnstown Career & Technology Center; Pennsylvania Highlands Community College; Pennsylvania Academy of Cosmetology; Mt. Aloysius College; St. Francis University/ Center of Excellence for Remote Medical and Under-Served Areas (CERMUSA); Career Link; and the US Army and Army Reserve. Those attending offered students information, job shadowing, and co-ops on careers ranging from engineering to secretarial work to the health field.

The event was organized by Eva Dobransky of Career Link, with the aide of Richard Capraun from the high school. Dobransky took care of contacting and obtaining the vendors, where as Capraun took care of the building preparation for the event. "This is twice as big as it was last year; just think of how big it will be next year,” said Capraun excitedly in a discussion regarding the attending vendors.

Capraun also noted that as part of Health Careers Week, a county-wide poster contest was held. Kaitlin Cramer, a Junior in Mrs. Nanassy's Health Occupations class, won third place in this contest.

Model Teachers

by: Katelyn Muller

Three GJHS teachers were recently chosen as model teachers. This is what Freshmen at Greater Johnstown High School learned at an assembly given by the Cambria County Coroner's Office--how to help save the lives of peers struggling with the idea of suicide. The presentation is titled The Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program. Cambria County Chief Deputy Coroner, Jeff Lees, along with counselor, Dan Ayers, and Dale Emme (father of Michael Emme), spoke about the tragic effects of suicide and the importance of having awareness on how to prevent it.

The Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program was initiated in Colorado, by the parents of Michael Emme, after their son committed suicide at the age of seventeen in 1994. Their purpose of establishing this program is to provide insight to students all over the nation about the effects of suicide and to inform them of ways to help those who are at risk of committing suicide. Forty-seven countries and all fifty states are now involved with implementing the program. During the assembly, Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Cards are handed out to the students, which educate and encourage them to take the steps necessary to stop suicide in its tracks. The cards are to be used as a “lifeline;” when a card is given to someone, he/she is asking for help. The cards speak for themselves, and they let the receiver know what to do next. The color yellow was chosen because Michael drove a yellow Mustang, which he rebuilt and cherished very much.

Cambria County Chief Deputy Coroner, Jeff Lees, knows very well that suicide is the second most prevalent cause of death in teens within Cambria County. He is very involved with implementing the program throughout the county’s schools. During the program’s involvement at Greater Johnstown, he stressed that recognizing warning signs of suicidal thoughts and talking about emotional problems are essential in avoiding suicide.

After attending the program, students at Greater Johnstown were a lot more educated about suicide. The intention of the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program is to prevent the calamity of someone taking their life. The speakers stressed how suicide is a permanent solution to a non-permanent situation. Any student who was fortunate enough to experience the program is now prepared with a resolution to preventing suicide in themselves and those around them.

Key Club raises money for the Trojan College Access Center

Pictured above is the check presentation to Miss Cyndi Ahlborn of the Trojan College Access Center from the officers of the Greater Johnstown High School Key Club. Riding one hundred miles straight on a bike is not exactly an easy feat for anyone to accomplish, even if it's for a good cause. The last person anyone, faculty or students, would expect to embark on this ambitious endeavor would be Mr. Bill Chick, but, as the saying goes, always expect the unexpected.

The twenty-first annual Sea Gull Century bicycle ride took place on Saturday, October 10, 2009, at Salisbury University in Maryland. Eight thousand avid riders, including Mr. Chick and Mr. Callihan, flocked to this event and made the one hundred mile loop from the college campus and back again in order to raise money for specific charities. The two faculty members from JHS rode in the 73 degree weather, through a morning drizzle, and against an afternoon headwind in order to raise money for the Trojan College Access Center as well as for personal enjoyment.

Mr. Chick, who underwent a hip replacement last December, has participated in fourteen century rides since 1990 and has put in about fifteen hundred training miles throughout the past year, though he wished he had racked up a tad bit more before this century ride. He is happy to report that his hip replacement seems to have helped with his overall riding abilities because the doctors made his legs the same length when they replaced his hip, ensuring a smoother biking experience. When asked how sore he was after the fact, Mr. Chick stated, "I didn't feel too bad; I was more tired two days later. This is actually the best I've ever felt after completing a century ride, so it's been a pleasant surprise."

During the actual ride that weekend, Mr. Chick and Mr. Callihan made use of the various strategically placed rest stops along the route to stock up on carbohydrates and sports drinks as they biked. Now since everyone must be wondering who finished the ride first, Mr. Chick or Mr. Callihan, it must be reported that the two faculty members "tied"; because they waited for each other at rest stops and kept each other company along the way, it isn't really possible to determine a "winner" between the two.

The staff and students of Johnstown High School thank Mr. Chick and Mr. Callihan for their splendid efforts on behalf of the Trojan College Access Center and are glad to hear that everything went well on the adventure known as the Sea Gull Century.

The Challenge Program, Inc. This is the 6th year The Challenge Program, Inc. has provided financial incentives to Greater Johnstown students.

For the 2009/2010 school year, a few modifications have been made to the program to motivate and include a larger number of students to compete for an award. This year, the top 10% of students in each of the categories listed above will be eligible to win $250.00. Each eligible student will be notified at the end of the 3rd grading period and asked to complete a brief online survey. Submission of a survey will enter the student in a lottery drawing to be held at the school to determine a winner for each award.

Partnering with The Challenge Program, Inc. to provide incentives to the students is Mount Aloysius College. Mr. Matt Bodenschatz from Mount Aloysius was on hand to address the students at an Orientation Assembly held at the school on September 15th. The Challenge Program, Inc. would like to thank Mount Aloysius College for their support and commitment to Greater Johnstown High School.

For more information about The Challenge Program, Inc., visit our website at www.tcpinc.org or contact your school’s guidance counselor.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://gjsdjournalism.blogspot.com/2009/11/challenge-program-inc-awards-25000-to.html' title='The Challenge Program, Inc. Mrs. Arcurio also pointed out the importance of literacy at the early elementary level because as she noted, without a basic foundation of literacy, other content areas become increasingly more difficult as a child progresses throughout his or her education.
After the brief presentations, parents were given the ability to observe their child’s reading classes. Students or staff members who choose to participate in “casual Fridays" must bring in a non-perishable food item. The goal is to help people through the economic downturn while simultaneously teaching students to become good citizens.

J. This can especially be witnessed every single Friday throughout the school year with all of the blue and black that can be seen throughout the hallways and classrooms. So, it was no surprise that on Friday, October 16, 2009, Johnstown High School stayed true to their “Pride and Tradition” motto for the big game against the McCort Crushers. Faculty members participated by wearing the team’s away jerseys during the school day and at the game, for a donation of at least one dollar. This was used to help purchase pom poms that were given to the first two hundred Johnstown students who entered Trojan Stadium that night for the game. Many Trojan fans showed their school pride by wearing their blue for a “freeze out” theme, and cheering enthusiastically throughout the game. The Trojans played a hard-fought game against McCort, but the game did not end in their favor; the final score of the game was Trojans: 21-McCort: 40. Despite this loss, Johnstown’s school pride still remains strong.

New School Store Merchandise

The JHS School Store is pleased to announce that we have new inventory in for all GJSD fans.
